How radiation helps the immune system kill cancer?

International Research Awards

How radiation helps the immune system kill cancer?

Radiation therapy, traditionally known for directly killing cancer cells by damaging their DNA, also plays a powerful role in helping the immune system fight cancer. When tumors are exposed to radiation, the damaged cancer cells release signals and fragments—called tumor antigens—that alert the immune system to the presence of the tumor. This process can turn the tumor into an “in situ vaccine,” stimulating immune cells such as dendritic cells and T cells to recognize, target, and attack not only the irradiated tumor but also distant, untreated tumors throughout the body. Radiation can also modify the tumor microenvironment, making it less suppressive and more accessible to immune cells. In combination with immunotherapy, radiation has shown a synergistic effect, enhancing the body's natural ability to detect and eliminate cancer cells more effectively.

How Hypoxia-Responsive tRNA Fragments Save Your Kidneys!

When oxygen levels drop in your kidneys—a condition known as hypoxia—your body launches a remarkable defense. One of the heroes in this biological rescue mission is tRNA-derived fragments (tRFs). These small RNA molecules, once thought to be just cellular debris, are now known to play crucial roles in protecting kidney cells under stress. Hypoxia-responsive tRFs help regulate gene expression, reduce inflammation, and prevent cell death, offering potential new avenues for therapies against kidney diseases such as acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease. This exciting discovery reshapes how we understand cellular adaptation and opens doors for precision RNA-based treatments in renal medicine.

How COVID Sped Up Our Brains’ Aging!

Emerging research reveals a startling truth: COVID-19 doesn't just impact the lungs—it may accelerate brain aging. Even mild cases have been linked to memory loss, decreased cognitive performance, and changes in brain structure, especially in regions tied to attention and emotional regulation. Long COVID symptoms like brain fog, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating mimic those seen in decades-older individuals, suggesting the virus may speed up neurological aging. Scientists are racing to understand how inflammation, vascular damage, and immune responses triggered by the virus contribute to this silent cognitive toll.
