Cervical Cancer in Bulgaria: Battling the Odds Since EU Entry
Since Bulgaria’s accession to the European Union in 2007, the country has made measurable progress in healthcare reform, yet cervical cancer remains a persistent public health challenge. Bulgaria continues to report one of the highest cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates in the EU, largely due to low participation in organized screening programs, limited HPV vaccination coverage, and disparities in access to preventive healthcare—especially in rural and underserved communities.
